Burgess family college football picks week seven: #defense

I know. There was no post last week. And that’s the worst because there should have been one. But work was nuts and I was swamped, so I will try to make up for it with a great one this week.

A quick recap of last week: We discovered the Big 12 plays no defense. What do I mean by this? I mean every Big 12 game that I picked last week, the team I picked to cover not only didn’t cover, they got completely blown out. But that was last week, so here are everyone’s picks and the updated standings.

Joe: Sooner, War Eagle, Houston, UNC, Sparty, Aggies, Trojans, Pigs, Washington, FSU 38 Miami 20

Rosemary: Texas, Auburn, Houston, Virginia Tech, Michigan State, Texas A&M, USC, Bama, Washington, Miami 31 FSU 24

MK: Oklahoma, Auburn, Houston, UNC, Michigan State, Texas A&M, Colorado, Alabama, Washington, Miami 35 FSU 27

Anne: Oklahoma, Auburn, Navy, UNC, Michigan State, A&M, USC, Alabama, Washington, Miami 21 FSU 10

Sarah: Texas, Mississippi State, Navy, UNC, Michigan State, Tennessee, Colorado, Arkansas, Washington, FSU 35 Miami 30

Pop-Pop: Texas, Auburn, Navy, UNC, Michigan State, USC, Alabama, Washington, Miami 31 FSU 27

Molly: Texas, Mississippi State, Navy, Virginia Tech, Texas A&M, USC, Arkansas, Oregon, FSU 28 Miami 24

So, now for the Week 6 Standings:

  1. Pop-Pop (6-4) best Miami score
  2. Rosemary (6-4)
  3. Sarah (5-5) picked FSU
  4. MK (5-5) best Miami score
  5. Anne (5-5)
  6. Molly (4-6) best FSU
  7. Joe (4-6)

Overall standings:

  1. Joe & Ro (35-24)
  2. MK (34-25)
  3. Sarah & Anne (33-26)
  4. Pop-Pop (31-28)
  5. Molly (22-32)

My dad summed up how he felt about the quality of defense displayed by the big 12:

For those wondering, Malarky is our 10 year old dog. Scarlett is our 2 year old dog.

Moving on to this week. The games were a little bit more close, especially with the Alabama – Tennessee matchup. Tennessee finally ran out of miracles last week against A&M, in one of the coolest games I’ve seen this season, besides the Notre Dame – Texas matchup. The other game to watch out for was Wisconsin taking on Ohio State. The Buckeyes have yet to be challenged and Wisconsin put up a great effort against Michigan, but fell short. Would the Badgers prove themselves to the rest of the big boys or fall short once again?

We’ll get to all of the games and how nuts they were in a minute. Let’s take a look at this week’s games: NC State at (8) Clemson (-18), Kansas at (11) Baylor (-35), Kansas State at (19) Oklahoma (-11), (1) Alabama (-12.5)  at (9) Tennessee, (10) Nebraska (-4) at Indiana, UNC at (16) Miami (-8.5), Mizzou at (18) Florida (-13.5),  (14) Ole Miss (-7.5) at (22) Arkansas, Stanford at Notre Dame (-3), and (2) Ohio State (-10) at (8) Wisconsin.

Let’s first talk about Alabama – Tennessee. This game started out kind of tight, with a really cool trick play that allowed Alabama to score its first touchdown. Then, after the Tide went up 14-0, the Vols got on the board. 14-7. Would this be another epic comeback? Not in the slightest. We do have to address that Tennessee was injured and had a few starters missing, but Jalen Hurts hurt the Vols ( I had to, couldn’t help myself.) By that, I mean the man rushed for 132 yards and 3 touchdowns in the Crimson Tides 49 to 10 route of the Volunteers. Now this second loss for Tennessee means Florida is now in first place in the East and in control of its destiny, much to the joy of my father.

Speaking of the Florida Gators, this weekend was the annual game in which I am completely and utterly torn about who to root for. Mizzou – Florida. My alma mater versus the team I have grown up loving since I was two. But once the game started, it was the same pain I have had to watch for both teams the past two years on offense, and the same tenacity on defense. I don’t know what is going on with Mizzou, but you cannot take less than a minute on offense for 3 consecutive drives. I don’t care how good your defense is, they are not going to be able to hold a team if they are playing 90% of the game. Honestly? If Florida doesn’t get those back to back pick sixes? That game is still 6-0 off a pair of field goals. Another thing the Gators have to fix? Can they quit it with the false starts? 8 of them?!? Seriously. Thank the lord they have a bye week before Georgia, (LOL WHO LOST BY ONE TO VANDERBILT AT HOME.) But both Mizzou and Florida have to figure out what is, or really, isn’t happening on offense. Because right now, both teams are lacking in that department.

The other great game that went on this weekend that was full of defense? Ohio State and Wisconsin. The Badgers came out to play. Their defense was on fire in the first half, but in the second half… J.T. Barrett put his team on his back and led them to victory. It was a thrilling overtime victory, but Barrett just couldn’t be contained.  It was a wonderful effort by the Badgers, but its hard to win when a QB is rushing for 2 touchdowns, threw for 229 yards and a touchdown, and was just hard to contain at any point on the field.

Last game I have to mention: Kansas. Really? 35 point underdogs and you guys can’t cover that?! ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS SCORE TWO TOUCHDOWNS. Mizzou may have gotten embarrassed at Florida but they scored 2 touchdowns. Good night.

Now to this week’s picks.

Joe: Clemson, K State, Kansas, Alabama, Nebraska, UNC, Florida, Ole Miss, Stanford, Ohio State 35 Wisconsin 17.

Rosemary: NC State, K State, Baylor, Bama, Indiana, UNC, Gators (sorry), Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Ohio State 27 Wisconsin 10.

Sarah: NC State, Kansas State, Baylor, Tennessee, Nebraska, Florida, UNC, Ole Miss, Stanford, Ohio State 35 Wisconsin 24 (picked Wisconsin to cover)

MK: NC State, K State, Kansas, Alabama, Nebraska, Miami, Florida, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Ohio State 31 Wisconsin 24

Anne: NC State, Oklahoma, Baylor, Alabama, Nebraska, Miami, Florida, Ole Miss, Notre Dame, Ohio State 35 Wisconsin 24

Pop-Pop: NC State, K State, Kansas, Alabama, Nebraska, UNC, Missouri, Ole Miss, Stanford, Ohio State 28 Wisconsin 17

Molly: NC State, K State, Kansas, Tennessee, Indiana, UNC, Missouri, Ole Miss, Stanford, Wisconsin 31 Ohio State 28.

Week 7 Standings:

  1. Sarah (7-3)
  2. Anne (6-4)
  3. MK (5-5) Best OSU score
  4. Pop-Pop (5-5)
  5. Rosemary (5-5)
  6. Joe (5-5)
  7. Molly (4-6)

Overall Standings:

  1. Sarah, Joe, Anne and Ro (40-29)
  2. MK (39-30)
  3. Pop-Pop (36-33)
  4. Molly (26-38)

Almost back in the lead. But look at Sarah. For all her trash talk, she finally made a move. Now tied for first with my mom and my dad. The other surprise? Anne Burgess, making moves. Yes. It’s annoying that I’m still in second. But this is a marathon, not a sprint. And I finished my first half marathon in under 2 hours. I think I’ll be ok at the end of this competition. The only downside? Sarah is gonna be insufferable in the group chat the whole week now.

But here’s the question: what’s with Joe slipping the past few weeks? Will Sarah and Anne continue their upwards trend or is this just a fluke? Is Molly’s plan to be last the first half of the season and then smoke everyone the back half? Will I ever get out of second place? Next week, who knows what could happen.
